EUSPR 2025 Berlin: Venue, Accommodation & City Guide

Welcome to Berlin for the EUSPR 2025 Conference! This guide provides essential information about the conference venue location, nearby accommodation options, transport from the airport, getting around the city (pro tip: comfortable shoes and mastering ticket validation are key!), and some highlights for exploring this vibrant area. Consider it your indispensable companion for navigating both the conference and the unique charms of the German capital.

The EUSPR 2025 conference will be held at Campus Charité Mitte (CCM).

Nestled in the heart of Berlin’s vibrant Mitte district, the venue boasts excellent connectivity:

  • Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Main Central Station): Just a short walk away, this is a major hub offering:
    • National and international trains (ICE, EC, IC)
    • Regional trains (RE/RB, including airport connections)
    • S-Bahn lines (S3, S5, S7, S9 – traversing the city east-west)
    • U-Bahn line (U5)
  • Other Nearby Stations: You’ll also find easy access to:
    • U-Bahn line U6 (at Oranienburger Tor or Naturkundemuseum stations)
    • Tram lines (e.g., M5, M8, M10 connecting from Hauptbahnhof)
    • Numerous Bus routes

This central location makes reaching the venue and exploring the city via Berlin’s extensive public transport network exceptionally convenient.

To assist with your planning, we have compiled a list of hotels situated close to the conference venue, Campus Charité Mitte (CCM). The hotels listed below are all within comfortable walking distance. Please refer to the table for details on approximate walking times, price indications, and ratings.

The conference venue and surrounding hotels are conveniently reachable from Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER):

By Public Transport (Recommended)

This is often the most efficient and cost-effective method.

  • Look for the FEX (Airport Express) train or regional trains RE8 and RB23 departing from the station directly beneath Terminal 1 (follow signs for Regionalbahnhof / S-Bahn).
  • These trains offer direct connections to Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Hbf), typically taking around 30-35 minutes.
  • You will need a valid ticket covering Berlin zones ABC. Tickets can be purchased from machines (DB/VBB/BVG) at the airport station (accepting cash/cards) or via the official “BVG Tickets” or “DB Navigator” apps.
  • Important: Remember to validate your paper ticket (stamp it in the small red/yellow boxes on the platform *before* boarding) unless it’s pre-validated (like most app tickets).
  • From Berlin Hauptbahnhof, the venue and many hotels on the list are just a short walk away (see walking times in the table below).

By Taxi or Ride-Sharing

  • Taxis are available outside the terminals at designated ranks.
  • Ride-sharing services like Uber, Bolt, or FreeNow also operate from BER pickup points.
  • The journey time to the Mitte district can vary significantly (45-60+ minutes) depending on traffic.
  • The cost will be considerably higher than public transport (expect €50-€70+).

Please check current train schedules and public transport information closer to your travel date via the BVG or DB websites/apps, as timetables can change.

Berlin boasts an excellent and efficient public transport system (operated primarily by BVG within the VBB network), making navigation straightforward. Here’s a guide to help you choose the best travel options during the conference (Sept 23-26, 2025).

Public Transport Ticket Recommendations (ABC Zones Required)

Since Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is in Zone C and the conference venue/most central areas are in Zones A and B, you will need a ticket covering Berlin zones ABC for seamless travel, especially for your arrival and departure.

Best Value for Most: 7-Day Ticket ABC (VBB-Umweltkarte)

  • Highly recommended if you’re staying for 4 days or more (covering the main conference days plus arrival/departure).
  • Offers unlimited travel on all U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams, buses, regional trains (RE/RB), and the FEX Airport Express within zones ABC for 7 consecutive days from validation.
  • Most convenient: Buy once, validate (if needed), and travel freely.

For Shorter Stays: 24-Hour Ticket ABC (24-Stunden-Karte)

  • Ideal if your stay is shorter, or you only need comprehensive public transport on specific days (like arrival/departure).
  • Valid for 24 hours from validation for unlimited travel in zones ABC.
  • Note: Purchasing multiple 24-hour tickets can quickly exceed the cost of a 7-day ticket.

For Sightseers: Berlin WelcomeCard ABC (4, 5, or 6 days)

  • Combines unlimited ABC public transport with discounts on numerous tourist attractions.
  • Only cost-effective if you plan extensive sightseeing alongside the conference and will use the partner discounts.

Less Ideal Options

  • Single ABC tickets are expensive for multiple trips.
  • AB-only tickets require purchasing an additional “Extension Ticket C” (Anschlussfahrschein C) for each airport journey.

Where to Buy Tickets

  • Ticket machines (BVG/VBB/DB) at BER airport station, U-Bahn/S-Bahn stations (accept cash & cards).
  • Official apps: “BVG Tickets” or “DB Navigator”.
  • BVG customer centers.

Ticket Validation

Important: Remember to validate your paper ticket (stamp it *before your first journey* using the small red/yellow boxes on platforms or inside buses/trams) unless it’s pre-validated with a specific start date/time (common for app tickets). Travelling without a validated ticket incurs a significant fine.

Other Mobility Options

  • Public Transport (General): Berlin’s network is reliable, frequent, and extensive. U-Bahn (subway) and S-Bahn (urban rail) are often fastest for longer distances. Trams and buses cover local routes effectively. Use the BVG or Google Maps apps for journey planning.
  • Walking: Central Berlin, especially the Mitte district around the venue, is very walkable. Pack comfortable shoes!
  • Bike Rentals: Berlin is increasingly bike-friendly. Several providers offer app-based rentals (e.g., Nextbike by Tier, Lime, Bolt). Look for designated bike lanes, but be mindful of traffic, tram tracks, and occasional cobblestone streets.
  • E-Scooters: Widely available via apps (Tier, Lime, Bolt, Voi, etc.). Convenient for short trips but remember to follow traffic rules – riding on sidewalks is strictly prohibited, and specific parking rules apply (park considerately). Helmets are strongly recommended.
  • Taxis & Ride-Sharing: Traditional taxis are readily available (can be hailed or found at ranks). Ride-sharing services like Uber, Bolt, and FreeNow operate throughout the city via their apps. These are generally more expensive than public transport and subject to traffic conditions.

We encourage attendees to consider sustainable travel options when journeying to Berlin.

  • Travel by Train: Berlin Hauptbahnhof is one of Europe’s best-connected railway hubs. Consider arriving by train for a lower-carbon footprint. Information and booking for national and international rail travel are available via Deutsche Bahn (DB) and other European rail operators. We will also highlight specific train offers during the registration process if available.
  • CO₂ Compensation: For unavoidable travel emissions, especially from flights, we encourage you to consider offsetting your carbon footprint. Several reputable organizations offer calculators and offsetting options for individuals, such as Atmosfair or myclimate. Further information and potential direct links may be provided during registration.
